NEW ZEALAND UNDER 17 WOMENS BASKETBALL TEAM VISITS CENTENARY
Plays Local Junior Club Team, West Brisbane Falcons, As a Warm Up To Meeting the Australian Under 17 Team in a 3 Match Series.
Brisbane basketballs biggest junior basketball club, the West Brisbane Falcons was asked to provide a warm up game for the visiting New Zealand ladies team which club president Mr Mal McGreachan enthusiastically accepted. A combined team of local “falcons” junior players was assembled to take on the might of the New Zealand national u17 team. Promising and experienced players ranging from 14 years to 18 years of age teamed up last night at the home of the falcons – the centenary state high school gym. Two experienced BBI referees were appointed to control the match and the local spectators and visiting supporters, parents and coaches saw an entertaining and tight game. The end result was a 3 point win to the much taller New Zealand team.
With similarity to the famous Norm Provan and Arthur Summons rugby league picture captured years earlier, seen at the end of the game is New Zealand’s imposing centre congratulating Falcons player Ms Nerida Peever.
West Brisbane Falcons next International Challenge is against the Heritage Park Highlanders from British Columbia, Canada. The game will be played on Saturday September 05 starting at 6.00pm at the Centenary State High School Sports Centre nicknamed “The Cauldron.” The West Brisbane Falcons girls would love as much support as possible so come down and cheer them on. This will be our 3rd International Game for the year after playing the South Vancouver Island Team recently also from British Columbia, Canada defeating them 67-42.
The West Brisbane Falcons junior basketball program trains at the Centenary High School and fixtures are played at the Vince Hickey basketball stadium in Auchenflower and cater for players, male & female, from under 10 years to under 23 years. Anyone interested in playing or trialling basketball should contact our administrator Ms Denise Beede on 3376 1631 for more information.
